![]() In the above photograph the building to the right, marked with "G" is identified as "Synagoguae Indeorum". The Swedish artist Erik Dahlberg (1625 – 1703) is reported to have done an engraving or drawing of the synagogue that was built in Berestye (Brest-Litovsk or Brisk) in the 16th century, maybe about 1569. It is said that the engraving or drawing shows the synagogue as a “brick two-storied building with renaissance features”.
The above engraving "The Siege of Brest" by Erik Dahlberg dates back to 1657. The Swedish King Charles X destroyed the Brest Castle and plundered the outer city on the bigger island, where the famous Brest synagogue was located. In the Polish history this was called "Deluge" as the Swedish invaders plundered and ravaged to ashes many cities in Central Poland and Belarus.
