Berestye The Archeological Museum exhibits what the Belarusian archeologists unearthed in the ancient settlement of Berestye. On March 2, 1982 this archeological museum was opened on the site.The archeological complex includes buildings of 11th and 12th centuries. The are also remnants of wooden houses of the 14th century standing along three main streets with barns and shops of the craftsman. Plenty of everyday things made of iron, leather and fabrics have been excavated and are exhibited at the museum. The museum is not at all big, but extremely interesting. The Rescued Arts Treasures Museum contains more than 300 pieces of old Russian icons from the 16th - 20th centuries. In addition paintings, items used during religious ceremonies, pieces of china and furniture are exhibited there. There are also things made of jade, silver, copper and porcelain that were either handmade or manufactured in western Europe, Russia, China and Japan. The majority of the items exhibited have been confiscated from smugglers by Brest customs officials. It is the only museum of the kind in the whole former USSR. This museum was opened in 1989. Brest Regional Museum has many displays on the geography, economy and history of the entire Brest region, including the local lore. This museum was opened on June 22, 1957 in what was the old Catholic Cathedral. It moved in the 90's to its present location. It is located at K. Marksa, 60 - 224646 Brest, Belarus. City History Museum presents the history of the city. They possess maps of Brest dating back to the 17th - 20th centuries. One map came from Prussian State Library in Berlin (Preussische Staatsbibliothek, Berlin) as a replica, dating back to the 17th century. A big painting by Fetisova, local artist, presents Brest of the 17th century with the prominent Brest citizens, including rabbi Zalman or the like. This museum was opened in 1998. Museum of Brest Fortress Defense presents detailed history of the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress in June - July 1941, as well in September 1939. This museum was opened on November 8, 1956. Picture to come - Arts Museum located in the rebuilt Brest fortress barrack in the Citadel. This museum is quite new with paintings and sculpture of the local artists.
