Mr. Arkady Blacher, in 2004, lives in Brest, Belarus. He is in charge of the Holocaust Center and the Archives in Brest.
Several years ago, to mark his 80th birthday, he was interviewed by a local newspaper. His grandson, Vadim, will scan the Russian newspaper text and we will add the Russian text and English translation, to this page. Mr. Blacher speaks Russian, Belarusian, a little Yiddish and a little German.
Mr. Blacher says that he recalled that his great grandfather, Moische, immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. In the year of 1914, Moische traveled on the S/S Batavia, from Hamburg, Germany to New York City. He went through Ellis Island and then to a brother in Cleveland, Ohio.
He does not own a computer, but can be contact through his grandson Vadim.
Mr. Blacher has a two-volume set of books entitled Pamyat. Belarusian: Memory. Published in 2001, the books are written in Russian and Belarusian. There is extensive material about the Jews of Brest who died in WW2.
Mr. Blacher and his NGO participated in the collection of the information contained in this book.
