My mother, Tema Stavsky, married Moshe Birenboim. Moshe's father, Ephraim (Froim) Birenbaum, was the Gevir --the richest man-- of the village of Janów Podlaski. He owned a very large two-story house. He gave Tema and and Moshe the second story of the house to live in. So they moved from Volchin to Janów Podlaski, and I was born there. During that time, my mother used to sell the overabundance of cheese and butter produced from the milk of family cows.
My parents were traditional. I knew that my father went to the synagogue but also on Shabbat he played cards with friends. Even though he read the Torah in the syngagogue, I can say they were not very religious.

| Webmaster's notes: Gevir: an informal discussion of the history of this word may be found near the end of this discussion thread. Janów Podlaski: a small village to the southwest of Volchin. Sometimes overlooked as a Jewish town. According to its JewishGen locality page, the Jewish population of Janów Podlaski in 1900 was 2,149. |
