As shown on Shmuel Englander's Map, there were two water wells in Volchin: One in the main (market) square and another southeast of the Jewish Cemetery, near the homes of Alter Bach and Avraham Kupershmit.
There was [in addition] another one near the brick syngagogue [see 1997 photo, here]. During the war, the synagogue and its nearby well were within the Ghetto.
One drew water from each by means of a pail on a rope.
My great grandfather, Meir Shevach Stavsky --who was visiting from Wysokie Litewskie-- fell into the well in the main (market) square.
